HSG-HYCOSY

HSG/Hycosy

Hysterosalpingography (HSG) and Hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography (HyCoSy) are imaging techniques used to assess the uterus and fallopian tubes, primarily in evaluating female infertility. Both procedures aim to check if the fallopian tubes are open or blocked, which can impact a woman’s ability to conceive.

Hysterosalpingography (HSG)

HSG is an X-ray procedure that uses a contrast dye to visualize the shape of the uterus and the fallopian tubes.

  • Procedure: During HSG, a thin catheter is inserted through the cervix to inject a dye into the uterine cavity. As the dye flows into the uterus and fallopian tubes, X-ray images are taken to observe the flow. Blocked tubes will prevent the dye from passing through, indicating a potential issue.
  • Applications: Commonly used to detect blockages, abnormal uterine shapes, scar tissue, fibroids, and adhesions within the uterus or tubes.
  • Limitations: Involves radiation exposure (although minimal) and can be uncomfortable due to the catheter insertion and dye.

Hysterosalpingo-Contrast Sonography (HyCoSy)

HyCoSy is a less invasive, ultrasound-based alternative to HSG that also uses contrast but without radiation.

  • Procedure: A saline or specialized contrast agent (like foam or microbubbles) is injected into the uterine cavity via a catheter, and an ultrasound probe is used to visualize the uterus and fallopian tubes. Real-time images show the contrast as it flows through the tubes, indicating patency.
  • Advantages: No radiation exposure, minimal discomfort, and a shorter duration. It can also provide additional information about the ovaries and surrounding structures.
  • Applications: Used to check for blocked tubes, polyps, fibroids, or other abnormalities within the uterus.

Both HSG and HyCoSy are valuable in infertility workups, providing critical insights into uterine and tubal health to guide fertility treatment and planning.
