Feeling nervous about your first CT scan? At Al Safwa Radiology Center in Sharjah, we understand that medical imaging can feel intimidating when you don’t know what to expect. Here’s a step-by-step guide to your CT scan appointment.
Before You Arrive
When scheduling your CT scan at our Sharjah facility, our staff will ask important questions:
- What body area is being scanned?
- Do you have any allergies (especially to contrast dye or iodine)?
- Are you taking any medications?
- For women: Is there any possibility of pregnancy?
If your scan requires contrast dye, you’ll need to fast for 4-6 hours beforehand. You can usually take essential medications with small sips of water. Our team will provide specific instructions when you book.
What to wear: Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing without metal zippers, buttons, or decorations. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown.
What to bring:
- Doctor’s referral
- UAE ID or Emirates ID
- Insurance card
- Previous imaging (if available)
Arriving at Al Safwa Radiology
Plan to arrive 15-20 minutes before your scheduled appointment. This allows time for:
- Check-in and paperwork
- Changing clothes if needed
- Safety screening questions
- Starting an IV line (if contrast is needed)
Our reception staff will guide you through the process and answer any questions.
The Safety Screening
A technologist will review important information with you:
- Medical history
- Allergies
- Current medications
- Kidney function (important if you’re receiving contrast)
- Pregnancy status
Answer these questions honestly—they’re crucial for your safety.
If You’re Having Contrast
Some CT scans require contrast dye injected through an IV line in your arm or hand. The technologist will:
- Clean the injection site
- Insert a small IV catheter
- Secure it with tape
The IV insertion feels like a quick pinch. Once it’s in place, you won’t feel it anymore.
In the Scan Room
The CT scanner is a large, donut-shaped machine with a wide opening—much more open than an MRI machine. Most patients don’t feel claustrophobic.
You’ll lie on a cushioned table that slides through the scanner opening. The technologist will:
- Position you correctly for the scan
- Use pillows or straps to help you stay still
- Give you instructions through an intercom
- Leave the room (they monitor you through a window)
During the Scan
The table will move slowly through the scanner. You’ll hear gentle whirring or buzzing sounds—nothing too loud.
Staying still is crucial. Even small movements can blur the images and require repeating the scan.
The technologist may ask you to hold your breath for 10-15 seconds at a time. They’ll tell you exactly when to hold your breath and when to breathe normally.
If you’re receiving contrast:
Halfway through the scan, the contrast dye will be injected through your IV. Most patients experience:
- Warm sensation spreading through the body
- Slight metallic taste
- Feeling of warmth that may feel like you’re urinating (you’re not—it’s just the sensation from the contrast)
These sensations are completely normal and disappear within 1-2 minutes.
How Long It Takes
The entire CT scan process is quick:
- Positioning: 2-5 minutes
- Scanning: 5-10 minutes
- Total time in the room: 10-15 minutes
From check-in to leaving our Sharjah facility, expect about 30-45 minutes total.
After Your Scan
Once complete, you can get dressed and leave immediately. There are no activity restrictions after a CT scan.
If you had contrast:
- Drink plenty of water over the next 24 hours to help flush it out
- The IV site may be slightly tender—this is normal
- Rarely, some people develop a rash or itching hours later (contact us if this happens)
Getting Your Results
You won’t receive results immediately. Here’s what happens:
- Analysis: A board-certified radiologist carefully reviews your images
- Report: The radiologist prepares a detailed report (24-48 hours)
- Delivery: The report is sent to your referring doctor
- Follow-up: Your doctor discusses the findings and next steps with you
If you haven’t heard from your doctor within a week, follow up with their office.
